Center of Excellence for "Functional Surfaces and Interfaces for Nano Diagnostics (EFSUN)" aims to address the challenges in nano diagnostics through the usage of micron- and submicron sized systems exploiting the tools of medicine/molecular biology, material science, nano/microfluidics and power generation. Such an undertaking requires an in-depth understanding of biology of diseases, material fundamentals, surface and interface interactions, power generation in small scale along with targeted device design. The activities of the center target nano diagnostics-related fundamental questions and challenges in the rapid and accurate diagnosis of important human health problems such as cancer, neurodegenerative (such as Parkinson's disease) and inherited diseases (such as Gaucher's disease).
Research and development in "EFSUN Center of Excellence on Nano Diagnostics" consists of interdependent and complementary activities of researchers who are experts in their respective fields. The center provides a platform to excel in the field of nano diagnostics and to produce fundamental research and technology outputs, including discovery of novel disease markers, development of innovative nano-scale sensing molecules, smart coatings and interfaces (organic-inorganic and inorganic-inorganic) for bio chip development, cheap and user-friendly microfluidic chip platforms and high-performance and efficient power generation/energy harvesting options for applications in nano diagnostic devices.
